Plumber SEO Guide
How Plumbers Get More Leads From Google Without Paying for Every Click
You already know Google Ads work for plumbing — when someone has water coming through the ceiling, they're searching and they're ready to call. The problem is that you're paying $103–157 every time someone clicks one of those ads, whether they hire you or not. For emergency plumbing searches, that adds up fast. This guide covers how to build visibility on Google so you're getting calls without paying for every single one.
The Math That Makes This Worth Your Time
Say you're getting 20 calls a month from Google, and most of those clicks are costing you around $130 each. That's $2,600 a month in ad spend — before you've done a single job. Not unreasonable for a busy plumbing company, but it's money that's gone the second you pause the ads.
Now imagine half those calls started coming from the map pack or organic search instead. Same 20 calls a month, but you're only paying for 10 of them. That's $1,300 back in your pocket every month. Over a year, that's more than $15,000 — from doing the same volume of work.
SEO doesn't replace ads overnight. But every lead that comes through organic or the map pack is a lead you didn't have to buy. The math compounds over time, and your ad budget goes further because you're not using it to cover calls that your visibility should be generating for free.
How Google Decides Who Shows Up for Plumbing Searches
When someone searches "plumber near me" or "emergency plumber [city]," Google has four different places it might show your business. Understanding which is which helps you know where to focus your effort.
Paid ads sit at the very top — the "Sponsored" listings. You pay per click. For plumbing, those clicks are $103–157 in most markets. Google's Local Services Ads (the "Google Guaranteed" badge) sit even higher for many plumbing searches, and they charge per lead rather than per click.
The map pack shows 3 local plumbers on a small map, usually right below the ads. This is where most emergency calls originate. It's controlled by your Google Business Profile — your reviews, your profile completeness, and how close you are to the person searching.
Organic results are the regular blue links below the map. These are controlled by your website — the pages you've built, the words on them, and how much Google trusts your site.
AI answers are the newest surface — Google AI Overview summaries and answers from ChatGPT or Perplexity. These are increasingly recommending specific plumbers by name, and almost no plumbers are tracking this yet.
Get Into the Map Pack
The map pack is the most valuable real estate for plumbing leads. When someone has a burst pipe, they're not scrolling down past the 3-business box to find a blue link. They tap one of those 3 numbers and call. If you're not in that box, you're invisible to a huge chunk of the people who are ready to hire right now.
Your Google Business Profile controls this. Claim it at business.google.com if you haven't. Then:
- Set your primary category to "Plumber" and add secondary categories for drain cleaning, water heater installation, and other core services
- Set your service area to every city and zip code you actually cover — not just your home base
- Add real photos: your truck, your team, completed jobs like water heater installs or repipe work
- Mark whether you offer 24/7 emergency service — if you do, say it explicitly in your description
- Post updates periodically — a photo from a recent job, a reminder about seasonal maintenance, anything that shows the profile is active
Reviews are the other major factor. More reviews, more recent reviews, and a high rating all push you up in the map pack. Ask after every job. A simple text with a direct Google review link gets a response rate far higher than asking in person or hoping people do it on their own.
Respond to every review — positive and negative. When you respond to a negative review professionally, future customers see that. When you ignore it, they see that too.
Build Organic Rankings With Real Service Pages
The map pack covers urgent searches. Organic search covers everything else — people who are researching, comparing options, or looking for a specific service before something breaks. For those searches, your website needs to show up.
The most effective thing you can do is build individual pages for each service and location combination. Not one giant "Services" page — separate URLs for each:
- "Drain Cleaning in [City]"
- "Water Heater Repair in [City]"
- "Water Heater Installation in [City]"
- "Emergency Plumber in [City]"
- "Sewer Line Repair in [City]"
Write each page for the homeowner, not for search engines. Explain what the service involves, what causes the problem, roughly what it costs, and how to reach you. Don't stuff keywords in. A page that reads like a real explanation of drain cleaning will outrank a page that says "drain cleaning [city] drain cleaning services [city] best drain cleaning" twelve times in 300 words. Google has gotten very good at telling the difference.
If you serve multiple towns or suburbs, add location pages. Even 200 honest words about why you serve a specific area — mentioning local neighborhoods or landmarks — beats a blank page or copy-pasted filler.
Don't Ignore AI Search — Your Competitors Aren't Watching It Either
A growing number of people ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, or Perplexity something like "who's a reliable plumber in [city]?" — and get an answer with specific business names. That's not a standard search result. It's an AI recommendation based on what it knows about your business from review sites, your website, and business directories.
Most plumbers have never checked whether they show up in these answers. That's the opportunity. Plumbers with complete, consistent information across Google, Yelp, Angi, and their own website are more likely to be recommended. Plumbers with messy or incomplete profiles often get ignored entirely.
You can't buy your way into AI recommendations the way you can buy an ad. You earn them through a strong presence across multiple platforms. The businesses that start building that presence now will have an advantage when more customers start their search with an AI tool instead of typing into Google directly.
Stop Renting Leads From Platforms You Don't Own
Angi, Thumbtack, and HomeAdvisor work by owning the top of Google for plumbing searches and then selling you the leads those searches generate. You pay every time — sometimes for leads that go to you and three other plumbers simultaneously. The moment you stop paying, the leads stop.
Your own Google presence is an asset you build and own. A Google Business Profile with 150 reviews and a website that ranks for "water heater repair [city]" keeps generating calls whether or not you're spending anything this month. Lead gen platforms rent you access to customers. Your own visibility is something you own.
That doesn't mean abandoning Angi completely — some plumbers use it strategically for new service areas where their own visibility isn't built yet. But it should be a bridge, not a permanent strategy.
Track What's Actually Working
You can't improve what you can't measure. If you don't know your current map pack position for "plumber near me," you don't know if the work you're doing is moving it.
Google Business Profile Insights shows basic data — profile views, direction requests, calls. Google Search Console shows some organic keyword data. Between the two, you get a partial picture.
AnalyticLunch tracks all four surfaces in one place: your map pack position, organic rankings, who's running paid ads in your market, and whether AI platforms are recommending you — for $14/month. That's less than the cost of a single Google Ads click in the plumbing market. It also shows you your competitors' positions on each surface, so you know not just where you stand, but who you need to catch.
